monitors to meet varying needs and budgets
WR
Medical Electronics Co. manufactures a line of facial nerve monitors
and stimulators for use in the operating room during head and neck
surgery, and the clinic. Two of these devices, the Silverstein
Facial Nerve Monitor/Stimulator, Model S8, and the Brackmann
II EMG System, are used to locate and monitor the facial nerve
during ear, nose, and throat surgery.
The Silverstein S8 uses a noninvasive,
highly sensitive cheek sensor to detect the muscle movement that
results from facial nerve activity. The Brackmann II uses electrodes
placed in facial muscles to detect EMG activity that may occur
due to manipulation, irrigation, or stimulation of the facial nerve.
The Hilger
Facial Nerve Stimulator, has been the fundamental technique
for facial nerve stimulation since 1965, and is used in the clinic
to evaluate conditions such as Bell's Palsy.
