Preservation of facial nerve function is a major concern during surgery for chronic ear disease. Facial nerve monitoring may offer intangible advantages to the experienced or attending surgeon that allow surgery to proceed more rapidly and with a greater sense of confidence .

The Silverstein Model S8 is a non-invasive monitoring system that allows for rapid set up for routine use and is easily managed by operating room staff. Constant-current, pulsed stimulation is delivered with two probe options; a monopolar disposable and a Remote Probe, which is monopolar and re-usable. The Remote probe allows the surgeon to increase or decrease current intensity directly from the handpiece.-

The Silverstein systems include the Silverstein Adaptor for Continuous Stimulation (SACS). The SACS kit allows insulated microsurgical instruments and air drills to be electrified and to function as probe tips during surgical dissection. It has been found to be easy-to-use, and decreases surgical time.

The monitoring system is a Check Muscle Movement Sensor, a strain-gauge style sensor that is placed onto the patient's cheek. Facial nerve activity is conveyed to the surgeon by audible signal.
